Dear Dr. Carly,

After hearing about the dreadful earthquake that hit Haiti on January 12, I was wondering what the population is like now?  Has it decreased dramatically?

Dear Unknown,
In 2008, the population in Haiti was counted as 9,780,064 people.  After the devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake, the population decreased by an estimated 316,000 deaths.  About 1,000,000 people became homeless and 300,000 were injured.  Therefore, yes, the earthquake made a huge impact on the population in Haiti.

  1. Dr. Carly,
Thanks so much for providing this information about Haiti! I am shocked to see the drop in population, I hope the United States and other countries are doing their part to help!

  2. These numbers and statistics are astonishing. What is going to happen to all of those displaced people? I can't begin to imagine what it's like to be living there right now, and I hope people in different countries are coming together to help the Haitians.
